The Sins of Salmon River by J. Barrie Paulson

Alex, a demolitions expert, just discharged from the Special Forces, stops over in rural Washington to visit an old Army buddy. He meets and becomes involved with Kate, the town darling. When he learns of Kate? meth addiction, he battles to save her and her son, Billy, who is being recruited by a ruthless teenage gang, the Posse. Inadvertently, he comes against a powerful West Coast gang. After a daring rescue from an explosive meth fire, the DEA pursues him as an informant and the gang works hard at eliminating him. Although theme oriented, about a drug made by anyone, anywhere, from anything, this suspense-thriller is definitely character driven with an extraordinary array of characters. A work of fiction more like The Grapes of Wrath than Traffic, it could easily be a true tale.
