The Private Life of an Elizabethan Lady: The Diary of Lady Margaret Hoby 1599-1605 by Margaret Hoby

Margaret (1571-1633), the daughter and heiress of a wealthy landowner, thrice married high-placed men, the third being the Puritan Sir Thomas Posthumous Hoby. Her diary covers a period when she was living on her estate in North Yorkshire. It records her spiritual endeavors, the life of her household, and such major events as the trip to London for a legal case in Star Chamber. It is thought to be the earliest example of a meditative autobiographical journal, which became a dominant genre for women in the 17th century. Well annotated. Distributed in the US by Books International. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
