The Hermetic Museum: Containing Twenty-Two Most Celebrated Chemical Tracts by Waite, Arthur Edward

Published in Latin in 1678, the first English translation, by an unknown author, was edited by A. E. Waite & published in two volumes in 1893. It was designed to supply a representative collection of alchemical writers, & instructed all Disciples of the Sopho-Spagyric Art how to find & hold the Philosophers Stone. This work represents a distinctive school of alchemy-it belonged to a period which had inherited a bitter experience of the failures, impostures, & misery surrounding the Magnum Opus & its mystical quest. Scholars of 1678 agreed that if alchemy were true at all, it was not to be learned from books up to that point. Readers will recognize traces of a central claim in alchemical initiation: that the secrets, whatever they may be, must be understood as coming from a group of adepts, & that the knowledge has existed since time immemorial, revealing itself to a select few. The treatises contained in this volume are by the authors of historical legend: John de Mehung, Nicholas Flamel, Basil Valentine, Eirenaeus Philalethes, Helvetius, Michael Maier, Michael Sendivogius, Nicholas Barnaud Delphinas, Basilius Valentinus. This one-volume edition affords students of the secret doctrines a unique opportunity to acquire these ancient alchemical texts in English.
