Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea by Gary Kinder

Chronicles the sinking of the SS Central America in 1857 about 200 miles off the Carolina coast, and her recovery in the mid-1980s. Returning from California, the side-wheel steamer sank with over 400 people and 21 tons of gold on board. The author recounts the events leading up to the sinking with the aid of passengers diaries and other primary materials from the era of the tragedy. To reconstruct the search for the ship, the author used the sonar logs, the ship captains logs, interviews with over 100 people, and his personal experiences on board the recovery vessel. No index.
