Description

Its October and Foxfield Elementary School is a bubbling caldron filled with the anticipation of Halloween and, more importantly, tryouts for the upcoming play. GWENDOLYN CLAIRE AND THE FOXFIELD SCHOOL PLAY (134 pages, 40 chapters) by Virginia L. Pulitzer is a middle grade chapter book for ages 9-12 that realistically portrays all the ups and downs of play tryouts from the point of view of a kid who wants, more than anything, (or so she thinks) the leading role in her new schools play. Gwendolyn Claire, a fifth grader with an incredible imagination, loves creative writing, acting in plays and, of course, like most kids, Halloween. Mixed in with the tricks and treats, Gwendolyn Claire also learns from her new best friend Heather that Barnard Memorial Public Library has a resident ghost! How cool is that? A ghost in a library, one of Gwendolyn Claires favorite places on earth! An even spookier event for Gwen, however, is the possibility of having competition for the leading role in the school play. In her "old school" Gwen always starred in the plays; would things be different now? GWENDOLYN CLAIRE VS. THE FOXFIELD FOUR, Virginia Pulitzers first book in the GWENDOLYN CLAIRE series found Gwen starting fifth grade in a new school where, almost immediately, she was confronted by a group of girl bullies. In the second book it is October and Gwen learns that any fright, even the green-eyed monster of jealousy, can be tamed with the help of true friends and good adult advice. As both a veteran teacher and, of course, a former kid, Virginia Pulitzer knows the day to day challenges of being in fifth grade from both sides of the teachers desk and both sides of the footlights. A former GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) teacher, Mrs. Pulitzer also is an active childrens theater playwright and director, and loves instilling the thrill of the stage in young people. Through her character Gwendolyn Claire, Virginia shares her passion for seeing the world, its joys and challenges, through childrens eyes.
