Firefly by P. T. Deutermann

n a medical clinic in Washington, D.C., two dubious doctors and their team are completing plastic surgery on a client who is altering his face. As the team finishes up, the patient begins to stir-and suddenly the operating room erupts in gunfire. Washington police begin an investigation, but are side-tracked by the upcoming presidential inauguration. Because of the strain on manpower, retired Secret Service agent Swamp Morgan is pressed into duty to investigate this firefly-a small but credible threat against the president. His task is to review the surviving medical records of the clinic. As Swamp begins what he thinks is a routine check-and-dismiss, the missing client pursues his mission: to launch an attack on the inauguration that will wipe out the outgoing and incoming governments and everyone in attendance. As that day ap-proaches, Swamp, the only agent to take this firefly seriously, must operate alone as the clock ticks down to a breathtaking finale.
