Confessions of a Depression Muralist by Frank W. Long

Longs memoir reminds readers of a time when government funding and artists were not at odds, both collaborating to create an ideal of American painting through mural projects. Long describes his struggles as a busboy and wedding cake designer before 1932 when he was commissioned by the Section of Fine Arts under the Department of the Treasury to create wonderful custom murals for buildings in Chicago, Louisville, and the Appalachian community of Berea. The author is as entertaining a story teller as he is a fine artist. Unfortunately there are only a handful of photographs in the volume to show off the latter talent. Lacks an index.
