We take our role as a corporate citizen seriously. Our innovative work ensures books will achieve their longest lifespan, diverts used or unwanted books from landfills, and creates access to reading materials in underserved communities. The books we obtain through neighborhood collection boxes are sold and donated in equal share. For every book sold through our collection boxes, another is donated to someone in need.

Since our inception, we’ve donated millions of books to literacy-based and community service organizations in neighborhoods throughout North America and around the world. We aim to do even more, and are constantly searching for and evaluating non-profit organizations, schools, libraries, and others as potential beneficiaries of our books.

Did you know?

  • 61% of low-income families have no children’s books in their homes and more than 80% of child care centers in low-income areas lack book corners, age appropriate books and other print materials (source: 2001 International Reading Association Report.)
  • The impact of language acquisition can be noticed as early as age three. In studies, socioeconomically disadvantaged children have a smaller vocabulary and limited language skills as compared to their more advantaged peers.
  • The language and literacy gap widens over time because without comprehending words and language, literacy and learning languish.

Our Impact

  • Since our inception, we have donated over 8.9 million books to help those in need and that number continues to grow.
  • We provide high-quality books to schools, libraries, non-profit organizations and literacy-based groups all over the world, and have the ability to make donations specific to genre and age appropriateness. Learn more about the impact of our donation programs by reading our stories.
  • In addition to the 8.9 million books we’ve donated, we have also helped Safeway Foundation Charities donate $2.8 million in donations to well-respected charitable organizations.
