Age 14 by Geert Spillebeen

Twelve year old Patrick Condon wanted nothing more than to escape the impoverished and tedious life he led in Ballybricken, Ireland. Leaving his family and his job as a dockworker behind, Patrick hatches a plan. Not wanting to wait until he was old enough to join the army, not wanting to wait until he was sixteen Patrick tells the army he is seventeen years old, and that his name is john. He gave the army the name and age of his older brother, and is enlisted. His dreams, it seemed, were coming true. In the army, Patrick, now John, makes friends easily. The older men take him under their wings. It is obvious that John is not 18, or 17, or even 16, but that doesnt matter to the people in charge. He is strong, fast, a hard worker. He loves his rifle, his uniform and the military routines. The mans world is just what John has always desired...he only wished there was more action. When the Austrian Crown Prince Francis Ferdinand and his pricess are mudered, and the World War I begins in 1914, John gets all the action he has been looking for, and more. Even though now a soldier must be 19 to go to the front, that isnt a problem for young John. He lied long ago, and so he is mobilized on August 7, 1914. Before he knows it, he is training with bayonets and long days of endless shooting practice in the cold. But John loves it. It is mearly a game for him so long as no blood is spilled. The Germans dont seem like a real threat. Belgium, France, they are so far away. But the war is very real, and it is only a matter of time before John is at the front of it all... Age 14 is based on a true story. It is a novel about dreams and their sometimes bitter realization. It is about war, and peace, and the lives lost to acheive both. It is about a young boy named Patrick, and named John, and the adenture and glory he so craved, and the tragic way he acheived both.
