A Season of Opera: From Orpheus to Ariadne by M. Owen Lee

Discusses 22 operas from the 17th to the 20th centuries in commentaries, lectures, and articles. Operas discussed range from the pioneering Orpheus by Monteverdi to the forward-looking Ariadne of Richard Strauss. In between, Father Lee (a Catholic priest and prof. emeritus of classics, U. of Toronto) discusses in an accessible, personal style punctuated by technical discoursing, such operas as The Magic Flute, La Traviata, Aida, Salome, and Porgy and Bess. The volume ends with advice on the best recordings of the operas, and suggested readings, but, a word of warning: this work is less for reference work than for reading. Father Owen Lee is known for intermission commentaries featured during broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
